Empowering Older Adults

A 74 year old woman came to CHIOC having been referred by a senior center she visits. She had been trying to get help with health coverage and was told she couldn’t be assisted. She had worked up until a few months ago so she never really needed assistance with healthcare because she had it through work. She spent time with Fernando, and he noticed she had trouble remembering details, so he took extra time to walk her through the process. Even though she had the list of documents required, she was missing some and became confused about which ones she had. Unfortunately, she did not have a car, so she had to take the bus each time to our office. She had made four different trips to our office and each time we helped her as best we could. On her fourth visit she had all of her paperwork that was needed and she was enrolled into Medi-Cal and CalFresh benefits.
